History
The Medusa Cascade went live on July 28, 2008, two short weeks after the domain was registered and work on it began. Although it was far from complete, it was a necessity to make it public as to get more space from the free host, it had to be getting hits. One month later, the site was put on a hiatus as Christine, the owner, went on a month-long vacation for September and didn't have time to work on the site again until mid-October. When the site came back from hiatus, screencaps for Doctor Who's spinoffs, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures were finally being added to the gallery.
What felt like a disaster occurred in early November 2008. Fan-Sites.org could no longer host The Medusa Cascade because of how large the gallery had become - and it still was nowhere near complete! With the help of some of Christine's friends, The Medusa Cascade found a new home on a new host and was up and running again by the New Year without any downtime - just no updates.
The site continued to run smoothly and reached its first anniversary on July 28, 2009, just weeks after 'Torchweek' had ended it's run in the UK. The site was on its fourth layout and the gallery on its second. By this time the gallery was complete with screencaps of every episode of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and even Doctor Who Confidential and Torchwood Declassified. And, in the midst of trying to get the gallery complete, other site updates were made including the all-essential news posts, episode guides with summaries on every episode of the three shows, awards the shows had won and been nominated for, filmography for all of the main cast members as well as ways to contact them and in the early stages were quote pages for all of the main characters as well as fact pages.
It was a very happy time in the site's history, things finally seemed to be getting done and The Medusa Cascade was gaining followers. However, all of this came with a downside when it seemed as though The Medusa Cascade might have to close. With the size of the gallery and the toll it took on the database, the host was asking for Christine to move the site to a different and much more expensive server that she could in no way afford. After looking for a new host and not finding one that was as helpful or as reliable as the one The Medusa Cascade had been on for almost eight months, Christine was able to breathe a sigh of relief when she and the host came to an agreement that she would simply have to make the gallery for registered users only. Feeling this was a fair trade, it was done and Christine breathed easier once more.
On November 17th, a little over a day after The Waters of Mars aired, things changed once again with it no longer being acceptable for the gallery to be available to registered users only and the gallery was disabled by the host without first warning Christine. The entire site was then moved to a new (and somewhat more expensive) host and the gallery was brought back online in a few weeks after all the images had been re-uploaded
During this time, the site received some good news. Christine was joined by The Medusa Cascade's first ever full time staff member, Ryan! No longer working on the site alone, Christine can now stop worrying about keeping the sections that are online up to date and take some time to work on new things and be assured things are running smoothly.
Now on its sixth site layout and fourth gallery layout, The Medusa Cascade is remembering Russell T. Davies' vision of Doctor Who as the Doctor Who fandom celebrates the arrival of the fifth series starring the Eleventh Doctor...
